AI could self-replicate on home devices within 'months', Anthropic says

Al Jazeera

AI could self-replicate on home devices within'months', Anthropic says Share AI could self-replicate on home devices within'months', Anthropic says on social media Small artificial intelligence models could soon begin self-replicating on everyday consumer products such as smart TVs and fridges, without needing a data centre, according to researchers at AI giant Anthropic. In a report released on Monday, the researchers said small AI models "may be months away from being capable enough" to copy themselves on internet of things (IoT) devices used in homes and small businesses. While data centres would be "a clear, high-value target" for AI worms, internet-connected devices like smart TVs, fridges, ovens and lawnmowers could soon also provide sufficient computing power for self-replication, the research team said. Although no current AI model proved to be both powerful and small enough to self-replicate reliably on a smart TV used in testing, the trend in development makes the emergence of such a model likely by the end of 2026, the researchers said. "Home and small business IoT devices might be the first target for such attacks because they're connected to the internet and, historically, have had minimal security measures in place," researchers William Zhou and Daniel Freeman said. The researchers said they anticipated the future would be "awash with agents running on all types of hardware", including some that "aren't under human control".

PCWorld

Ever wish you could turn a particular outlet on and off without using a physical light switch? Maybe for an outlet that isn't even hooked up to a light switch? And right now, you can grab a two-pack of Kasa Smart Plugs for just 13 on Amazon, which is 35 percent off its normal 20 price. If you don't want two, you can get the one-pack for just 8. Did Anyone Ever Really Need a Smart Display?

WIRED

When modern smart displays first arrived in 2017 in the form of the first-generation Echo Show, we called them creepy with big potential. Over the past six years, smart displays still feel like a lumbering category with untapped potential--Amazon, Google, and even Meta haven't been able to crack the code to turn a smart display into a must-have home device. It feels like these screens, which let you control smart home devices, make video calls, and ask voice assistants anything, should have had their Big Moment during the era of lockdowns and Zoom-only hangouts. But as Apple demoed during WWDC and Google unveiled at Google I/O, the best smart displays are already in our hands and homes. Both companies have announced software and hardware that take devices you're already familiar with--smartphones and tablets--and turn them into smart displays when you aren't using them.

The best smart plugs in 2023

Engadget

Smart plugs are among the simpler smart home devices, giving you voice and app control over appliances like lamps, fans, humidifiers and basic coffee makers. You can create schedules and routines, too, either through a plug's proprietary app or through your preferred smart home platform. But much like other IoT devices, which system plays nice with which plug depends on compatibility, and each brand's app offers different features. We tested out ten popular options to see which are worth buying. Before you buy one, it helps to know what a smart plug can and can't do. They work best with things that have an on/off switch, making them great for lamps and other lights.

CNBC reports that Google is reorganizing the management hierarchy within its virtual assistant division--Assistant--to concentrate on Bard. Last week, Google introduced Bard, its ChatGPT competitor, to the public as an experimental project. Previous reports indicate Google has been reallocating team members from various departments to concentrate on Bard as part of a "code red" effort. CNBC's report suggests that the effort is still ongoing. Google hasn't responded to requests for comment on CNBC's report.
